Markus Lynn “Mookie” Betts, born 7 October 1992 in Nashville, Tennessee, is an African American outfielder and shortstop, the son of Willie Betts and Diana Collins, both African American. Raised in Nashville, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2011 and debuted in 2014. In 2018 he won the American League Most Valuable Player Award and a World Series title with Boston. Traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, he won further World Series titles in 2020, 2024 and 2025, becoming one of the defining stars of his era — an elite right fielder who remade himself as a shortstop. In October 2026 he was the Dodgers' starting shortstop in the National League Championship Series against Milwaukee. Betts has spoken publicly about representation as, in 2020, the only Black player in that year's World Series.
