Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker, born 18 August 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, was a proud Afro-Latino right fielder who played all 18 of his major league seasons (1955–1972) for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The youngest child of a sugarcane worker and a laundress, he confronted Jim Crow segregation directly when the Pirates traveled in the South, and he defended Black and Latino players throughout his career. On the field he collected exactly 3,000 hits, batted .317, won four National League batting titles, twelve consecutive Gold Gloves and the 1966 NL MVP Award, and starred for World Series champions in 1960 and 1971, when he was World Series MVP. On 31 December 1972 he died in a plane crash off Isla Verde while personally accompanying earthquake-relief supplies to Nicaragua. In 1973 he became the first Latin American player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
