George Edward Clinton, born July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, is the singer, songwriter, producer, and bandleader who built Parliament-Funkadelic, the defining collective of funk. As a teenager he formed the doo-wop group the Parliaments while working in a Plainfield barbershop, and later worked as a Motown staff songwriter. In the 1970s he directed two bands drawn from one pool of musicians: Parliament, with its horn-driven dance funk and Mothership stage spectacle, and Funkadelic, with its psychedelic guitar rock, together developing P-Funk's mix of Afrofuturist imagery, surreal humor, and dance-floor discipline. He launched a solo career with Computer Games in 1982, home of 'Atomic Dog,' and his catalog became a foundation sample source for hip-hop and G-funk. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic, and in 2019 he and the collective received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.
