Parliament
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
Parliament is an American funk band that began in 1955 as the Parliaments, a doo-wop vocal group rehearsing in a Plainfield, New Jersey barbershop under George Clinton. The group scored a hit with “(I Wanna) Testify” in 1967, but a contractual dispute cost Clinton the name; he relaunched the singers as Parliament on Invictus Records in 1970, shelved the name, then revived it at Casablanca Records in 1974 as the horn-driven, R&B-oriented counterpart to Funkadelic — two distinct bands sharing members and one leader. Mothership Connection (1975) built the group's Afrofuturist mythology; “Flash Light” (1978) became the P-Funk collective's first R&B number one, and “Aqua Boogie” also topped the chart that year. Clinton wound the band down after 1980 before reviving the name in 2018. As Parliament-Funkadelic, the group entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.

Notes
Staged 2026-10-15 under CTL-GOV-006 (Next Slate D3). Gate A clear: no existing Parliament entity; alias 'The Parliaments' is the group's own former name (no other graph entity claims it). Gate B met (4 sources, 2 authoritative/primary). Statistics carried: '(I Wanna) Testify' 1967 hit (Revilot); 'Flash Light' and 'Aqua Boogie' R&B No. 1s in 1978 (AllMusic); RRHOF 1997; Grammy Lifetime Achievement 2019. Formation year carried as 1955 per Smithsonian + Clinton biography; the 'late 1950s' phrasing in some references is disclosed in the packet. P-FUNK HONESTY: Parliament and Funkadelic are distinct bands — separate names, labels, and album catalogs — with overlapping membership under Clinton; neither record absorbs the other. CTL treatment: Parliament's Mothership Connection is CTL Short #32 (published 2026-10-07). Photo slot: CANDIDATE named in packet (Commons, CC BY 3.0); nothing downloaded.
