Simone Biles, born 14 March 1997 in Columbus, Ohio and based in Houston, Texas, is an American artistic gymnast and the most decorated gymnast in history. Across three Olympic Games she has won 11 medals — seven gold, two silver and two bronze. At Rio 2016 she took four golds (team, all-around, vault and floor exercise) and a balance beam bronze. At Tokyo 2020 she withdrew from several events with the “twisties,” a loss of spatial orientation in the air, yet still won team silver and balance beam bronze, and her public prioritising of mental health reshaped the sport's conversation about athlete welfare. At Paris 2024 she returned to win team, all-around and vault gold and floor exercise silver. She also holds 30 World Championship medals, 23 of them gold, and in 2021 became the first woman to land the Yurchenko double pike vault in competition. She has not competed since Paris and has not retired; in September 2026 she told the Associated Press her decision on the Los Angeles 2028 Games was still “in the works.”
