John Wendell Smith, born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1914, was an American sportswriter whose campaign to integrate Major League Baseball helped bring Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. A graduate of West Virginia State College, he began at the Pittsburgh Courier in 1937 and was soon its sports editor, covering the Homestead Grays, Pittsburgh Crawfords, and Pittsburgh Pirates. After arranging a 1945 Boston Red Sox tryout for Robinson and two other Negro League players, he recommended Robinson to Dodgers president Branch Rickey, then travelled with Robinson in the minors in 1946 and with the Dodgers in 1947, rooming with him during spring training and writing the first Robinson biography. In August 1947 he joined the Chicago Herald-American, becoming one of the first Black sportswriters at a daily newspaper, and in 1948 he became the first Black member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He later wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times, broadcast for WGN, and campaigned in 1961 against segregated spring-training lodging. He died November 26, 1972, in Chicago, and in 1993 received the Hall of Fame's J.G. Taylor Spink Award posthumously.

STATISTICS — STATISTICS (sourced, dated): Career of 35 years, beginning 1937 (SABR, accessed 2026-10-16; Hall of Fame); died Nov. 26, 1972, aged 58 (Hall of Fame, accessed 2026-10-16); first Black BBWAA member, admitted 1948 (Baseball-Reference Bullpen; SABR places him among the first Black writers admitted that year); Spink Award in 1993, described by Editor & Publisher in search results as first African-American in the Hall's writers' wing.
