Harry William Porterfield (August 29, 1928 – October 23, 2023) was a Chicago television newsman whose career in the city ran from 1964 to his retirement in 2015. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he began broadcasting in 1955 as a jazz disc jockey at Saginaw's WKNX, after earning a chemistry degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1954 and serving in the Army in Germany. In 1964 he joined Chicago's CBS affiliate WBBM-TV Channel 2 as a news writer, eventually co-anchoring its news and creating Emmy Award-winning programs. In 1977 he launched Someone You Should Know, the profile series that became his signature, introducing viewers to unrecognized but extraordinary people across the Chicago area. In 1985 he left WBBM for ABC affiliate WLS-TV Channel 7, where he worked for twenty-four years and continued the series, before returning to WBBM in 2009. The HistoryMakers, which interviewed him in 2002, credits him with ten Emmy Awards, the Columbia DuPont Journalism Award, and the Studs Terkel Award; he also earned a law degree from DePaul University in 1993. Porterfield died October 23, 2023, aged ninety-five.
