Frank Ellis Wickware (March 18, 1888 – November 2, 1967) was a Negro leagues pitcher celebrated for a dominant fastball in Black baseball's pre-league and early league years. The Society for American Baseball Research gives his birthplace as Girard, Kansas, while the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum gives Coffeyville, Kansas, the town his family later moved to; this record shows both rather than blending them. Rube Foster hired him for the Chicago Leland Giants in 1910, and SABR reports an unofficial 18–1 record for Wickware that season on a team SABR describes as going 123–6. He pitched for Foster's Chicago American Giants and for many other leading Black clubs, led the Cuban winter league with 10 victories for the Fe club in 1912, and in October 1913 defeated Walter Johnson 1–0 in Schenectady in a game shortened by darkness. On August 26, 1914, pitching for the American Giants in Chicago, he came within a leadoff walk of a perfect game against the Indianapolis ABCs. SABR notes that he was considered for the National Baseball Hall of Fame's 2006 Negro leagues special election, was inducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011, and died in Schenectady, New York, in 1967.
