Very Smart Brothas is a Black American blog launched in 2008 by Damon Young and Panama Jackson. The two writers, fans of each other's work who connected online before ever meeting in person, built the site around humorous, conversational essays on pop culture, politics, dating, and relationships for a Black audience. By 2011 the blog averaged about 200,000 unique visitors a month, drew hundreds of comments per post, had published more than 750 posts, and had won two 2010 Black Weblog Awards, for Best Group Blog and Best Humor Blog. Young and Jackson also carried the brand into print with a self-published dating guide in 2011. In July 2017 Gizmodo Media Group acquired the blog, and Very Smart Brothas became a vertical of The Root, where Jackson is identified in the later coverage as a senior editor. The lineage matters because the site began as an independent two-person operation and ended the decade inside a larger Black media platform.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Very Smart Brothas entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6235 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2499 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: Blog / online publication; scan rank #2499. Typed Publication/other following the graph's treatment of its later home, The Root (CTL-E-0736, Publication/other). Vital status: Not a person; no vital dates. Founding 2008 and founders Young and Jackson are given by Black Enterprise (accessed 2026-10-16); the 2017 acquisition and move under The Root are given by Digiday (accessed 2026-10-16). CONFLICT SHOWN: secondary coverage variously dates Gizmodo Media Group's acquisition to 2016 and to July 2017; the two opened sources for this record support 2017 (Digiday), and an Adweek report of the move could not be opened in this session (browser rate limit, 429), so the 2016 dating is flagged as unverified here rather than blended in. STATISTICS — Audience figures are dated, not current: about 200,000 unique monthly visitors, roughly 350 comments per post, and more than 750 posts, all as reported by Black Enterprise in May 2011 (accessed 2026-10-16). No later traffic figure is asserted. MEDIA: photo HELD (HELD — candidate: founders' portrait photography published with Black Enterprise's 2011 Black Blogger Month profile of Young and Jackson; no license claimed — file-level rights read required under CTL-PHOTO-001.); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6235-very-smart-brothas.svg); video HELD (HELD — no Short in the CTL Shorts Link Map (2026-10-15) under Very Smart Brothas, VSB, Damon Young, or Panama Jackson; no near-miss title found in the map.); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Non-place record; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record’s sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (HELD — no Short in the CTL Shorts Link Map (2026-10-15) under Very Smart Brothas, VSB, Damon Young, or Panama ) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
