Fred Below Jr. was a Chicago blues drummer born in Chicago in 1926 and deceased there in August 1988. He started learning music and playing drums at DuSable High School, where at about fourteen he formed a jazz band with Johnny Griffin and Eugene Wright. He served twice in the United States Army, graduated from the Roy C. Knapp School of Percussion in 1948, then re-enlisted in the Special Services and served in Germany with the 427th Army Band before returning to the United States in 1951. Back in Chicago he joined the Aces, with guitar-playing brothers Louis and Dave Myers and harmonica player Junior Wells. In 1952 Little Walter left the Muddy Waters band, Wells took his place, and Walter took over the Aces; as Little Walter and the Nightcats they became one of the leading electric blues bands in Chicago. In 1955 Below left the band for Chess Records session work, while continuing on Little Walter's records and hit records for Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Rogers, Elmore James, Otis Rush, and Howlin' Wolf. Tony Russell credited him as a creator of much of Chicago blues' rhythmic structure, especially its backbeat.
