Cinema/Chicago is the Chicago nonprofit cultural and educational organization that presents the Chicago International Film Festival. Founded in 1964 — its founder, Michael Kutza, served as its chief executive until his retirement at the end of 2018 and remains CEO Emeritus — the organization states its mission as fostering better communication between people of diverse cultures through the art of film and the moving image, and serving Chicago's diverse and under-served audiences with access to world-class cinema. Beyond the October festival, Cinema/Chicago runs year-round programs: the CineYouth Festival each April, showcasing filmmakers 22 and under; the free Summer Screenings series; Community Cinema, bringing free screenings to under-resourced neighborhoods across the city; the Digging Deeper into Movies lecture series with Northwestern University professor Nick Davis; the Chicago Industry Exchange Lab (CIX:Lab), a creative-development program for emerging Illinois filmmakers; and the Black Perspectives program, the festival's year-round showcase for Black American and African-diaspora cinema since 1997. In 2026 the organization was named a Make It Better Foundation Philanthropy Award recipient, and the festival it presents was voted the No. 2 Best Film Festival in the U.S. for 2026 by USA Today readers.

Notes
Staged 2026-10-21 under CTL-GOV-006 (Festival Pass). Gate A: absent from both stores (head sweep, 2026-10-21). Subtype: Institution/other — the schema's Institution subtypes carry no festival/arts-presenter value; 'other' is the honest fit. The 2026 honors in the description's last sentence rest on Cinema/Chicago's own news posts (March and February 2026) — organizational self-report, used for honors only, not for any load-bearing fact. [Media layer — folded from the staged festival-pass packet at merge, 2026-10-21] Map: N/A — Institution with no homed Address record in this graph; no map drawn. Photo: HELD — basis: No Commons file depicts the organization, its offices, or its staff in an organizational capacity (searches 2026-10-21 returned the Bury, Lancashire cinema namesakes and generic Chicago theatre photographs). Chart: HELD — No sourced statistical series for the organization itself was located in this pass; its program dates are carried in this record's text and in the festival's chart (CTL-E-6298). Video: HELD — No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity video verified at the file level in this pass; official-channel embeds were not file-verified, so the slot is held rather than assumed. Audio: HELD — No rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists for this record.
