Michael Kutza is the Chicago graphic designer, filmmaker and film critic who founded the Chicago International Film Festival in 1964, at age 22, with the support of silent-screen star Colleen Moore; his memoir's account adds the help of director King Vidor. The festival debuted on November 9, 1965, at the Carnegie Theatre at Rush and Oak Streets, and Kutza then ran it for more than five decades: artistic director through 2017 — a tenure Cinema/Chicago identifies as longer than any other festival artistic director's — then chief executive of Cinema/Chicago, the presenting nonprofit he also founded, until his retirement at the end of 2018. Under Kutza the festival championed early work by Martin Scorsese (whose first feature it premiered in 1967), Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Claude Lelouch, Mike Leigh and Michael Moore, and hosted guests from Harold Lloyd and Bette Davis to Spike Lee, Halle Berry and Chadwick Boseman. He is the author of the memoir Starstruck: How I Magically Transformed Chicago into Hollywood for More Than Fifty Years, remains CEO Emeritus of Cinema/Chicago, and personally selects the festival's Founder's Award.

Notes
Staged 2026-10-21 under CTL-GOV-006 (Festival Pass). Gate A: absent from both stores (head sweep, 2026-10-21). Subtype Person/other: the schema's Person subtypes carry no filmmaker/festival-director value ('producer' was considered and rejected — his producing is not the sourced basis of his notability). VITAL STATUS: LIVING — no obituary appears in sourced coverage through October 2026, and his memoir's standing author biography describes him in the present tense as CEO Emeritus; this record asserts living status on that dated evidence, not on a 2026 sighting. ERA: 'c. 1942' is an arithmetic derivation from the sourced statement that he founded the festival at age 22 in 1964 — flagged as a derivation, not a sourced birth date. PHOTO depicts control: the Commons file's description and category name the subject as Michael Kutza; self-published work by a named creator with a complete license triple. [Media layer — folded from the staged festival-pass packet at merge, 2026-10-21] Map: N/A — Persons carry no map in the packet standard. Video: HELD — No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity video verified at the file level in this pass; official-channel embeds were not file-verified, so the slot is held rather than assumed. Audio: HELD — No rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists for this record.
