John E. Ruffin is the founding director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the National Institutes of Health, having led it and its predecessor center from 1990 to 2014 and built the federal research portfolio on minority health. A biologist by training, he created the institute's centers-of-excellence, loan-repayment, and community-based participatory research programs. His tenure made health disparities a standing category of NIH science.
