Gregory Tony
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Gregory Tony (born 1978) is the sheriff of Broward County, Florida — the first African American to hold that office. Raised in a rough Philadelphia neighborhood, Tony became a Coral Springs police officer in 2005, rising to sergeant, then left in 2016 to found Blue Spear Solutions, a training firm built on active-shooter response. On January 11, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Sheriff Scott Israel for the office's failures around the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, and appointed Tony sheriff of the county's roughly 5,500-person office. Voters elected him in his own right in November 2020 and re-elected him in 2024. Both sides of the record followed. During the 2020 campaign, the Florida Bulldog reported that at fourteen, in Philadelphia, Tony had shot and killed a neighbor in an altercation; charged as a juvenile, he was acquitted after claiming self-defense — an account the dead man's family disputes — and the sealed record had never been disclosed on his law-enforcement job applications. The Bulldog further reported that he had denied, when asked in a sworn background interview, having been arrested. Tony responded that he had acted to protect his brother and himself and called the episode 'childhood trauma.' Governor DeSantis said he had not known of the case when he made the appointment. In office, Tony fought a running battle with the deputies' union, which took a no-confidence vote against him in 2020 and asked the governor to remove him over COVID-19 protections for deputies; Tony suspended and later fired the union's president, Jeff Bell, torpedoing Bell's own run for sheriff.
