Reneé Hall

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Ulysha Reneé Hall (born February 10, 1971) was chief of the Dallas Police Department from 2017 to 2020 — the first woman, and the first Black woman, to lead that department. Hall grew up in Detroit; her father, a Detroit police officer, was murdered in the line of duty in 1971, when she was six months old, a case that was never solved. She joined the Detroit Police Department, earned bachelor's and master's degrees while serving, and rose to deputy chief in 2014. Dallas hired Hall in 2017, a year after an ambush had killed five Dallas officers in the worst single incident for American law enforcement since September 11, 2001; she took over a grieving, short-staffed department and inherited a pension and recruiting crisis. Her tenure included a homicide spike in 2019 and sharp public argument over her crime-reduction strategy. On September 8, 2020, Hall announced her resignation, effective at the end of that year, saying she felt called to other service. She was succeeded in Dallas by Eddie García.
