William Gross
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
William G. Gross (born c. 1964) was the first Black commissioner of the Boston Police Department. Born in rural Maryland and raised partly in Pennsylvania Dutch country, Gross moved to Boston at twelve and, after a period away that included a local steel mill, returned for good at twenty. He joined the BPD in 1984 as a patrol officer, worked nights in Mattapan and Dorchester with a van of community-service supplies for young people, and styled himself 'Grossy' — a name residents used for him on the street. He rose through sergeant and deputy superintendent to become, in March 2017, the department's first Black superintendent-in-chief. On August 6, 2018, Mayor Martin Walsh swore Gross in as the department's forty-second commissioner, the first African American to hold the office in its history. As commissioner he created the Bureau of Community Engagement, expanded body-worn cameras to half the force, and ordered reviews of the department's use-of-force policies. Gross announced his retirement on January 28, 2021, effective the next day — a departure described at the time as abrupt; the Boston Globe later reported that a health scare had prompted his decision. He was succeeded by Dennis White.
