PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Darryl Forté was the first African American chief of the Kansas City Police Department (his first name is spelled Darryl; the commissioning list renders it 'Daryl'). A career KCPD officer promoted through the ranks, Forté was sworn in as chief on October 13, 2011, succeeding James Corwin. Known for accessibility — walking neighborhoods, working directly with families of homicide victims through groups such as Mothers in Charge, and emphasizing community policing — he was a popular chief in Kansas City's Black community. The documented other side of his tenure emerged late: a Kansas City Star investigation published in September 2016 found serious failures in the department's unit investigating sex crimes against children, problems that had grown during Forté's tenure; an internal investigation, completed after his retirement by his successor, Rick Smith, resulted in discipline for seventeen officers. Forté retired as chief on May 20, 2017, after five and a half years, planning to work in his son's entertainment company. In 2018, after Sheriff Mike Sharp resigned amid scandal, the Jackson County Legislature appointed Forté sheriff of Jackson County, Missouri; he won election that November and served into the following decade.
