Combined Graph record U-07681 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6809.

Gene Baker (born June 15, 1925, in Davenport, Iowa; died December 1, 1999, in Davenport) was a slick-fielding middle infielder whose sure hands and adaptability carried him from the Kansas City Monarchs into the Chicago Cubs' infield at a moment when the club was only beginning to integrate. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) biography, named here as a source, recounts that Baker joined the Cubs with Ernie Banks near the end of the 1953 season, was converted from shortstop to second base, and formed a durable keystone partnership with Banks in Chicago. SABR records that he spent parts of five years with the Cubs before a trade to Pittsburgh, was a 1955 All-Star (a distinction also listed in his career summary), and continued in the game after his playing days in coaching and related roles. For Chicago, Baker's significance lies in steady, unsung competence at second base beside a future Hall of Famer, and in a career that kept opening work for others after his own playing time ended.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0280. Firsts disposition: roster firsts flag is UNSPECIFIED / pending per the assignment — NO first is asserted on this record, even though secondary literature discusses various Baker milestones; any CTL first claim awaits roster adjudication. Name note: SABR gives 'Eugene Walker Baker'; some summaries give the middle name as 'Walter' — both forms are retained as aliases pending primary-record adjudication. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Baker is the set's study in indispensable partnership — the converted shortstop whose reliability at second let the Banks era at shortstop work.
