Combined Graph record U-07714 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6842.

Lovie Smith was the head coach of the Chicago Bears for nine seasons, from 2004 to 2012, and the first Black head coach to lead a team to the Super Bowl. Hired by Chicago in 2004 after serving as defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, Smith built the Bears around a takeaway-driven defense. The Buffalo Bills' contemporary account of his tenure credits him with a regular-season record of 81–63 in Chicago, three NFC North division titles, and two NFC Championship Game appearances, in the 2006 and 2010 seasons. The 2006 Bears won the NFC championship and met the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI, where Smith and his mentor Tony Dungy became the first two Black head coaches to oppose each other in a Super Bowl; Chicago lost 29–17. Smith was named NFL Coach of the Year for the 2005 season. Dismissed after a 10–6 season in 2012, he later served as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the University of Illinois and the Houston Texans.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0417. Smith is recorded as a coach, not a player: the only relationship emitted is head_coach_of the Chicago Bears. Grade is Provisional under GOV-004 as applied in this pass: multiple independent sources verified, but none from the named authoritative tier (Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL.com, Britannica) among the URLs retrieved. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Smith's 2006 season is a landmark in Black coaching history — the first Black head coach to reach a Super Bowl, achieved with a Chicago team built on takeaways — and his nine-year tenure is the longest of any Bears coach of the modern era after Ditka.
