Ronald Dean Coleman (born May 13, 1964, in Monroe, Louisiana, and raised in Bastrop), known as "The King," is an American former professional bodybuilder who shares the all-time record for Mr. Olympia titles. At Grambling State University he played football as a middle linebacker under Hall of Fame coach Eddie Robinson and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Unable to find accounting work, he became a police officer in Arlington, Texas, serving from 1989 to 2000 and as a reserve officer until 2003, and took up bodybuilding at a colleague's urging, winning Mr. Texas in 1990. From 1998 through 2005 he won the Mr. Olympia title eight consecutive times, equaling Lee Haney's record, and won 26 IFBB professional titles in all. His combination of size and conditioning redefined the sport's top division. In 2020 he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the first bodybuilder elected to it.

The record

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0228. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in its sourced form — 'first bodybuilder elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (Class of 2020),' stated by the Hall itself in this record; the Mr. Olympia claim is a shared RECORD (eight consecutive titles, 1998–2005, tying Lee Haney), supported by Britannica, the Hall, Wikipedia, and BarBend. FLAG: Coleman's Grambling graduation year is given variously as 1984, 1986, and 1989 across published accounts (the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame places his Grambling football seasons at 1983–86), so the description states the degree without a graduation year; his birthplace is likewise given as Monroe (Wikipedia) with upbringing in Bastrop, which the description shows as born Monroe / raised Bastrop. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Coleman is the rare champion whose origin story — accounting graduate, working police officer, free gym membership — is documented as plainly as his dominance; the eight titles tied Haney, but the physique that won them reset what the sport believed a body could be.
