John Ayers Merritt, born January 26, 1926, in Falmouth, Kentucky, and deceased in December 1983, was known as 'Big John.' The College Football Hall of Fame, which inducted him posthumously in 1994, records a 60-32-4 mark in his first head-coaching job at Jackson State from 1953 to 1962, then his greatest success at Tennessee State from 1963 to 1983, where his record was 172-33-7. The Hall records that the Pittsburgh Courier chose his Tennessee State teams as Black college national champions seven times — 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1979 and 1982 — and gives his total record for thirty-one years as 232-65-11. Tennessee State's own history likewise credits him with four undefeated seasons, the school's first NCAA Division I-AA playoff victory in 1982, and a program he took, in the university's words, to its highest level.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0434. Firsts disposition: no 'first' is claimed for Merritt in the cited sources; Tennessee State's first NCAA Division I-AA playoff victory (1982) under Merritt is carried attributed to TSU/Hall accounts. Records carried only as the College Football Hall of Fame states them (TSU 172-33-7; career 232-65-11); a Tennessee historical marker and some compilations give variant TSU figures (174-35-7) — not blended. Championship counts differ by source framing (Hall: seven Pittsburgh Courier Black college titles; TSU feature phrases six national championships and four Black college titles) — the Hall's attributed version is carried and the variance is noted here, not merged. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): 'Big John' made Tennessee State a perennial Black college power whose best teams stood with any in the country. Photo: HELD — no Commons file naming this John Merritt was found in the Lane A attempt.
