Arnold Raymond Cream, born January 31, 1914, in Merchantville, New Jersey, fought as Jersey Joe Walcott — a ring name he took, the International Boxing Hall of Fame records, from his boxing idol, the earlier welterweight champion Joe Walcott of Barbados, a different fighter. Walcott turned professional in 1930 and challenged Joe Louis for the heavyweight title in 1947. The Hall records that he won the heavyweight title on his fifth try: after Ezzard Charles beat him again in their first 1951 meeting, Walcott knocked Charles out in the seventh round of the rematch to finally win the crown at age thirty-seven, then the oldest man to win the heavyweight championship — a record that stood until forty-five-year-old George Foreman won in 1994. He lost the title to Rocky Marciano, retired after their 1953 rematch, and later served as a referee and as chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 and died February 25, 1994.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0457. [Head correction, 2026-11-03: the staged packet carried SPE-0439 in error — that row (named "Joe Walcott" in roster v2) is the ORIGINAL Barbados Joe Walcott, a different fighter who remains unbuilt; this record's subject, Jersey Joe Walcott, is roster row CTL-SPE-0457. The AAES Cohort 7 entry is filed under 0457.] Firsts disposition: oldest heavyweight champion of his time — carried in the Hall's dated form (oldest to win the title at 37 in 1951, record held until George Foreman at 45 in 1994), never as a standing record. Identity, stated plainly: this record is Arnold Raymond Cream, 'Jersey Joe' Walcott; he took his ring name from the ORIGINAL Joe Walcott of Barbados, an earlier and different fighter — the two men must never be conflated. Death-date variance: most accounts give February 25, 1994; Encyclopedia.com gives February 2, 1994 — the description carries only the year-side facts both support plus the commonly reported date is flagged here rather than blended. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Walcott's is a perseverance record — five title tries across two decades before the left hook against Charles made him champion at thirty-seven.
