Harry Wills, born May 15, 1889 in New Orleans, was, in the International Boxing Hall of Fame's words, a top heavyweight contender in the early 1920s who 'was denied a title shot because of his race.' The Hall states that champion Jack Dempsey welcomed the fight, that both men signed contracts to face each other, and that the Governor of New York canceled the contest fearing race riots would follow, with Wills receiving $50,000 for the cancellation; other histories date the signed agreement to July 1925 for a 1926 bout with promoter Floyd Fitzsimmons and describe its collapse in financing and official opposition — both accounts are carried here, attributed, because the documented core is the same: the fight was signed and never happened. The Hall credits Wills, 6'4" and 220 pounds, ranked as high as number one from 1924 to 1926, with a record of 65-8-2 with 25 no-decisions, 3 no-contests and 47 knockouts, including 22 meetings with Sam Langford (6-2 with 14 no-decisions) and three wins over Sam McVey. He held the World Colored Heavyweight Championship, the segregated title of his era. Wills died December 21, 1958 and was inducted in 1992.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0444. Firsts disposition: none claimed. Exclusion disposition: CENTRAL to this record and carried claim by claim — IBHOF: denied a title shot because of his race; signed Dempsey contracts canceled by the Governor of New York fearing riots, $50,000 compensation (IBHOF). The July 1925 Fitzsimmons agreement for a 1926 bout and its collapse (Wikipedia/BoxRec histories) are carried as a second, attributed account; historians' disagreement over Dempsey's personal willingness is noted, not resolved — Dempsey's stated willingness rides as his claim, the blocking as documented fact. Vitals splits: record totals split by accounting — IBHOF 65-8-2 (25 ND, 3 NC) vs BoxRec-derived totals that fold newspaper decisions in (up to 89 wins); description rides the IBHOF figure attributed. Nickname also appears as 'Brown Panther' in some sources. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Wills is the heavyweight color line's defining case — a No.1 contender for years whose championship fight exists only as contracts and a cancellation payment. Photo: CLEARED — Agence Rol portrait, 1920, Public domain, Commons/BnF description identifies Harry Wills (1889-1958) specifically; a second Commons file is misfiled under 'Harry Willis' and was not used. Gate A (head, at assembly): the bare alias "Black Panther" was removed — it already routes in this graph to Black Panther (film) CTL-E-5475; Wills's ring name is carried in its precise form, "The Black Panther."
