Beau Jack was the ring name of Sidney Walker, born April 1, 1921 — the International Boxing Hall of Fame gives his birthplace as Augusta, Georgia, while BoxRec and most biographies give Waynesboro, Georgia, with Walker raised in Augusta, a split carried in the notes. Raised by his maternal grandmother Evie Mixom, who gave him the nickname, Walker shined shoes in Augusta and, BoxRec states, fought in Jim Crow-era 'battle royals' as a teenager; after a battle royal at Augusta National Golf Club he shined shoes there, and club members including golfer Bobby Jones financed his move to Massachusetts for formal training. The Hall states he turned professional in 1940, stopped Tippy Larkin in December 1942 for the New York version of the lightweight title, and then fought a four-fight series with Bob Montgomery — losing the title in May 1943, regaining it in November, losing it again in March 1944, and winning their August 4, 1944 non-title 'War Bonds Fight,' which the Hall states produced a record $35,000,000 gate for war bonds. The Hall credits him with 21 Madison Square Garden main events, more than any other fighter. He died February 9, 2000 and was inducted in 1991.

The record

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0449. Firsts disposition: the 21 Madison Square Garden main events are carried as the IBHOF states them ('more than any other fighter in history'). War Bonds figure: $35,000,000 (IBHOF, rounded) vs $35,864,900 (BoxRec) — description rides the Hall's rounded figure attributed. Vitals splits: birthplace Augusta (IBHOF) vs Waynesboro, raised Augusta (BoxRec/most biographies) — flagged, not blended; record split — IBHOF list figure 91-24-5 (44 KOs) vs 83-24-5 (40 KOs) in BoxRec-derived and marker sources — no single total asserted in the description for that reason. The Montgomery four-fight series is carried in both this record and S7-36, sourced to IBHOF and BoxRec. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Jack's arc — Augusta shoeshine stand to a record 21 Garden main events and a $35 million war-bond gate, then back to shining shoes — is the era's economics written on one life; the record holds the triumph and the ending together. Photo: CLEARED — 1949 photograph, Public domain, Commons description 'American boxer Beau Jack' identifies him; a 2024 Commons file of a different 'Beau Jack' (artist Beau Jack Imua Key) was rejected as a namesake.
