Bob Montgomery, the 'Philadelphia Bobcat' — BoxRec gives his birth name as Robert Nathanil Montgomery — was born February 10, 1919 in Sumter, South Carolina and, the International Boxing Hall of Fame states, turned professional in 1938, campaigned primarily in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, and went unbeaten in his first 23 fights. He is best known for his four-fight series with Beau Jack: the Hall states Montgomery won the New York State world lightweight title by decisioning Jack over 15 rounds on May 21, 1943, lost the crown to Jack six months later, and regained it with another decision over Jack in March 1944. Their most famous meeting was the non-title August 4, 1944 bout at Madison Square Garden, where, the Hall states, the crowd generated a record gate of $35,864,000 for war bonds; both men were then inducted into the U.S. Army. Montgomery defended against Allie Stolz and Wesley Mouzon in 1946, then was knocked out by NBA champion Ike Williams in 1947 in a bout to determine an undisputed lightweight champion. The Hall lists his record as 75-19-3 with 37 knockouts over 97 bouts. He died August 25, 1998 and was inducted in 1995.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0450. Firsts disposition: none claimed. The Beau Jack four-fight rivalry is carried in both this record and S7-35, sourced to IBHOF and BoxRec, including the War Bonds Fight ($35,864,900 per BoxRec; IBHOF rounds the Jack-page figure to $35,000,000 — the Montgomery-page figure is used here). Vitals: birth name spelling 'Robert Nathanil Montgomery' is BoxRec's, carried as BoxRec gives it; record 75-19-3 (37 KOs) rides the IBHOF figure attributed, and it agrees with the Hall's published list. His January 25, 1944 knockout of Ike Williams (BoxRec) is the loss Williams avenged in 1947 — carried in S7-37 as well. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Montgomery is too often filed as the other half of Beau Jack's story; a two-time New York champion who also knocked out Ike Williams in his prime years stands on his own record.
