Sandy Saddler, born Joseph Saddler on June 23, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Harlem, was, Britannica states, world featherweight champion in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The International Boxing Hall of Fame states that the long, lean Saddler turned professional at 17, fought 93 bouts before his first title shot, and knocked out Willie Pep in four rounds on October 29, 1948 to win the featherweight title — the start of a four-fight series in which Pep regained the title by decision in February 1949, Saddler regained it by TKO in 1950, and Saddler defended it in a foul-marred fourth fight in 1951 that, the Hall states, was stopped after the ninth round because of swelling around Pep's eye. Saddler also won the vacant junior lightweight title in December 1949. The Hall credits him with 103 career knockouts, more than any other featherweight champion, and lists his record as 144-16-2. Contemporary and later characterizations of Saddler as a rough, foul-prone fighter — Boxing News summarizes a 'spiteful streak' that 'gave him the reputation as a foul fighter' — are carried here as attributed reputation, not editorial fact. A detached retina suffered in a car accident forced his retirement at 30. He died September 18, 2001 and was inducted in 1990.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0452. Firsts disposition: '103 knockouts, more than any other featherweight champion' carried as the IBHOF states it. 'Dirty fighter' disposition: carried ONLY as attributed characterization — IBHOF ('third and fourth Pep fights were marred by fouls'), BoxRec (the fourth fight 'such a dirty fight' that the NYSAC acted; The Ring's 1997 'sixth dirtiest fight' list), and Boxing News's reputation summary; never as editorial fact, and the NYSAC sanction fell on both men (Pep's license revoked, Saddler suspended). Vitals: record rides IBHOF/Britannica 144-16-2 (103 KOs); a 145-win variant circulates in some compilations and is not used. Given name Joseph 'Joey' Saddler (BoxRec/Wikipedia); 'Sandy' explained by Boxing News as taken from his father's name, Alexander. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Saddler beat the era's most celebrated pure boxer three times in four fights; the fouling reputation is part of the record, attributed, but it should not be allowed to swallow the punching record — 103 knockouts at featherweight is the headline the Hall itself leads with. Photo: CLEARED — 1949 photograph, Public domain, Commons description 'American boxer Sandy Saddler' identifies him. Gate A (head, at assembly): the alias "Joseph Saddler" was removed — it already routes in this graph to Grandmaster Flash CTL-E-1051, a different man with the same birth name; the boxer's birth name remains stated in his description, and the alias "Joey Saddler" is retained.
