The Cited Media Archive
CultureTechLens is a free online encyclopedia of Black Chicago and the global Black diaspora, published by a Chicago nonprofit — and its archive is no longer a wall of photographs only. Photographs, video, and audio now stand under one cited, rights-logged roof: every item carries its source, its rights basis, and a citation, or it does not stand here at all. Four ledgers, kept separate on purpose — a photograph is never counted as a video, and a production take is never counted as a work.
How an item enters
Verification before publication (GOV-004): a video enters when a CultureTechLens record — link map, publication log, or the site’s own embed inventory — verifies it exists on the channel; an audio file enters when its production record documents CTL’s rights to the audio itself; a photograph enters through the Photo Rights Log. What cannot be verified is held, counted in its held ledger, and named with its reason in the register: MEDIA-REGISTER.csv, published with this archive’s audit (MEDIA-AUDIT.md).
Trust & evidence
Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.
Every claim graded. Every source named. Every correction public — see the corrections log.
