D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer (February 11, 1974 – October 14, 2025), was a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Richmond, Virginia, and a founding figure of neo-soul. Raised on church piano, he co-wrote Black Men United’s “U Will Know” (1994) before Brown Sugar (1995) joined classic R&B craft to hip-hop rhythm and stayed on the Billboard 200 for 65 weeks. Voodoo (2000) debuted at number one and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album; Black Messiah (2014), a fourteen-year follow-up credited with the Vanguard, won the same award again. In all he won four Grammy Awards. D’Angelo died in New York City on October 14, 2025, at 51, after a private battle with pancreatic cancer, his family announced; he leaves three albums and a genre reshaped around them.
