Jhené Aiko
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
Los Angeles singer and songwriter whose light, expressive soprano and unhurried, confessional writing helped define the sound of alternative R&B in the 2010s. Born Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo on March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles, she first sang as a teenager contributing backing vocals for the R&B group B2K, then stepped away to finish her education before returning with the self-written mixtape Sailing Soul(s) in 2011. Her breakthrough came in 2013, when her feature on Big Sean's single Beware became her first Top 40 hit and she released the EP Sail Out, whose single The Worst reached No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut studio album Souled Out followed in 2014, the collaborative project Twenty88 with Big Sean in 2016, and the expansive Trip in 2017. Her third album, Chilombo (2020), which folds crystal singing-bowl tones into her arrangements, earned three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year and stands as the fullest statement of her healing-centered artistry.

Statistics: Born March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles (GRAMMY.com artist page, accessed October 15, 2026) · Seven Grammy nominations and no wins through the 67th Grammy Awards, per the Recording Academy artist page (accessed October 15, 2026) · The Worst peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 (GRAMMY.com) · Chilombo earned three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards (GRAMMY.com) · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — Jhené Aiko turned softness into a discipline: where her peers chased radio, she built a meditative R&B in which grief, desire and recovery share the same breath. CTL files her as a foundational voice of alternative R&B's Los Angeles school, and as a bridge between the B2K era and the streaming-era confessional. · Photo slot: CLEARED — Wikimedia Commons File:Jhené Aiko (cropped).jpg, The Come Up Show from Canada, CC BY 2.0, verified via Commons API 2026-10-15; direct URL https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Jhen%C3%A9_Aiko_%28cropped%29.jpg?utm_source=commons.wikimedia.org&utm_campaign=imageinfo&utm_content=thumbnail_unscaled; master in packet photos/.
