Founding of the NAACP (1909)
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
On February 12, 1909 — the centenary of Abraham Lincoln's birth — a group of Black and white activists issued 'The Call' for a national conference on the state of Black civil rights, answering the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois, Lincoln's own hometown, which had exposed how far the nation had drifted from emancipation's promises. The conference met in New York that spring, and the organization it built — the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People — adopted its name in 1910 and grew into the central legal and lobbying instrument of the long civil rights movement. W. E. B. Du Bois (CTL-E-1484), a signer of the Call and the organization's director of publications and research, founded its magazine The Crisis in 1910. The NAACP itself is held at CTL-E-0498 (with the Chicago Branch at CTL-E-0286); this record holds the founding as an event, the moment the movement acquired its permanent institution. Through the Legal Defense Fund's predecessor work inside the association, the NAACP's lawyers carried the case load — Buchanan, Gaines, Sweatt, Brown — that dismantled Plessy piece by piece.

Notes
Statistics: The Call: February 12, 1909; name adopted 1910 (NAACP). The intake paste's stop #11 (1909) is VERIFIED. Existing graph records: NAACP CTL-E-0498 (Provisional — flagged in the audit for enrichment), Chicago Branch CTL-E-0286; a founded_by edge from CTL-E-0498 to Du Bois (CTL-E-1484) already exists in the graph and is untouched by this merge. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Every movement in this timeline that needed a lawyer, a lobbyist, or a magazine eventually reached for the institution founded in this record. CTL files the founding as an event in its own right, because institutions deserve birthdays, not just obituaries and anniversaries. · Photo slot: HELD — no rights-cleared image was verified for this record in the merge run's bounded Commons sweep (2026-10-15); slot stays HELD until a cleared image is obtained (commons upload, public-domain government portrait, or CTL original), per CTL-PHOTO-001.
