PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Living Single, created by Yvette Lee Bowser, premiered on Fox in August 1993 and ran five seasons to 1998, following Khadijah James — a magazine editor played by Queen Latifah — and the circle of single friends sharing a Brooklyn brownstone. It was a genuine hit: one of the most-watched Black programs of the 1990s, ranked No. 1 among Black and Latino households in the Nielsen measurements cited in Bowser's biography. Its format is its legacy. An ensemble of young Black professionals, dating and working and leaning on each other in a shared apartment world, preceded and is routinely named as the template against which Friends — which premiered a year later on NBC — is compared, and series including Insecure cite its influence directly. Variety placed it on its 2023 list of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time. This record anchors the shelf's account of a recurring pattern in television history: a Black-created format proves the audience, and the industry's memory initially files the proof under somebody else's name. The graph files it under Bowser's.

Notes

Statistics: Fox, premiered August 1993, ran to 1998; 5 seasons. GOV-004 note: the exact premiere day is reported inconsistently across sources (August 22 vs. August 24) and is left UNRESOLVED in this record — month and year only, per the research file. Filed as Work/other: schema v0.2.6 carries no television subtype, and none was invented inside this merge (schema changes are a separate, reviewed step). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Living Single is the citation problem in sitcom form: influence everywhere, credit contested. The record does the graph's one job — it names the creator, dates the run, and lets the comparison shows be footnotes for once. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
