PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Girlfriends, created by Mara Brock Akil, aired on UPN from September 11, 2000, to May 8, 2006, and on The CW from October 1, 2006, to February 11, 2008 — eight seasons, 172 episodes following Joan Clayton and the three friends whose interior lives, careers, and negotiations with each other were the series' actual subject. Where Living Single had built the form, Girlfriends refined it into a drama of Black women's friendship treated with novelistic patience: the show centered four women's inner lives rather than a romantic pursuit, a framing its cast and creator identify as its breakthrough. It became one of the longest-running Black-led sitcoms of its era, and its ending is part of its history — cancelled in the writers'-strike period without a produced series finale, a loose end its audience has never accepted. It also spun off The Game, extending Akil's television world. The graph files Girlfriends as the 2000s' defining entry in the friendship-sitcom line that runs from Bowser through Akil to Rae — three creators, three decades, one form, all now on the shelf.

Notes

Statistics: UPN 2000–2006 + The CW 2006–2008; 172 episodes (Wikipedia). Creator Mara Brock Akil holds no graph Person record — flagged as a future candidate, not minted in this Works wave. Filed as Work/other: schema v0.2.6 carries no television subtype, and none was invented inside this merge (schema changes are a separate, reviewed step). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Girlfriends treated Black women's friendship as a subject worthy of eight seasons of close attention — and television is still catching up to its patience. The missing finale stays in the record: institutions are also what they failed to finish. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
