Empire (TV series)

CTL-E-5465 · Work · other · 2015–2020

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Empire, created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong and produced by Imagine Television with 20th Century Fox Television, aired on Fox from January 7, 2015, to April 21, 2020 — six seasons built around Lucious Lyon's hip-hop empire and the family fighting to inherit it, with Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon becoming, in first-season critical coverage, the show's defining performance. Its ratings were a genuine phenomenon: the premiere drew nearly ten million viewers, the first-season finale about seventeen million, and contemporary reporting described it as breaking a twenty-three-year record — the only scripted series to grow its total audience in each of its first five episodes. Original music functioned as a narrative engine rather than decoration, a network-scale bet on hip-hop as prime-time's center. Its Chicago connection is production, and this graph counts production: set in New York, Empire was filmed in Chicago, its pilot shot at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios in March 2014, and trade coverage grouped it with the city's other standing series in making Chicago a top television production hub under the Illinois incentive.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Fox, 2015–2020; 6 seasons (Wikipedia). Chicago connection (sourced): filmed in Chicago (Cinespace) though set in New York (TheWrap). Named 'Empire (TV series)' for disambiguation from the generic word's many graph uses. Filed as Work/other: schema v0.2.6 carries no television subtype, and none was invented inside this merge (schema changes are a separate, reviewed step). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Empire's audience curve did something ratings historians had stopped expecting, and it did it with a Black family melodrama scored like a record label. That it was manufactured in Chicago while pretending to be New York is the graph's favorite kind of footnote — the city's fingerprints on the decade's biggest show. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
