Sister Souljah (born Lisa Williamson in 1964 in the Bronx, New York) is the activist, recording artist and author whose name became a permanent term in American political language. A Rutgers graduate in American history and African studies who also studied at the University of Salamanca, she came up affiliated with Public Enemy — described as a member in scholarly accounts and as an associate in university coverage — and released her only album, 360 Degrees of Power, in 1992. That spring, remarks she made in a Washington Post interview after the Los Angeles unrest were repudiated by presidential candidate Bill Clinton at a Rainbow Coalition meeting on June 13, 1992; the calculated distancing entered the vocabulary as a "Sister Souljah moment." She answered celebrity with books: the memoir No Disrespect (1994) and the novel The Coldest Winter Ever (1999), a foundational text of modern street literature whose Midnight series she has continued since 2008. CultureTechLens profiled Sister Souljah in Short #175.
