Professor Griff (born Richard Duane Griffin on August 1, 1960, on Long Island, New York) was Public Enemy's Minister of Information — the role, unique in hip-hop, that made research and ideology a named seat in a rap group. An Army veteran, Griffin ran a security firm, Unity Force, which he converted into the S1W, the uniformed Security of the First World whose drills framed the group's stage show. Recruited when Chuck D formed Public Enemy in 1986, he handled press and research and co-wrote "She Watch Channel Zero?!" on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988). In June 1989, after anti-Semitic remarks in newspaper interviews drew widespread condemnation, Chuck D dismissed him at a Manhattan press conference — SPIN's contemporary feature documents the firing. Griffin then recorded solo, beginning with Pawns in the Game (1990), and rejoined Public Enemy in the mid-1990s. CultureTechLens profiled Professor Griff in Short #176.
