Angela Davis (born Angela Yvonne Davis on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama) is a political activist, philosopher and author whose 1970–72 prosecution made her an international figure and whose later scholarship helped define prison-abolition thought. Hired as an assistant professor of philosophy at UCLA in 1969, she was fired by the University of California Board of Regents over her membership in the Communist Party USA; after a court ruled that firing illegal, the university dismissed her again. In August 1970, firearms registered in her name were used in an armed attack on a Marin County courtroom in which four people were killed; Davis, who was not present, was charged with murder, kidnapping and conspiracy, placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, captured in New York, and held for more than a year before a jury acquitted her of all charges on June 4, 1972. She later taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz — where she is Distinguished Professor Emerita — ran for vice president on the Communist Party ticket in 1980 and 1984, co-founded Critical Resistance in 1997, and wrote Are Prisons Obsolete? (2003). CultureTechLens profiled Davis in Short #185.
