N.W.A was an American hip-hop group from Compton, California, and the act Ice Cube's record in this graph has pointed to without holding. The original lineup, formed in early 1987, consisted of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Ice Cube, with DJ Yella and MC Ren joining later that year. Their debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton (1988), marked the beginning of the gangsta rap era, its production and social commentary drawn from the members' own experiences of racism and excessive policing, and it drew an FBI response and widespread radio bans while selling in the millions. Arabian Prince left shortly after the debut, and Ice Cube followed in December 1989. The remaining lineup's Niggaz4Life (1991) became the first hardcore rap album to reach number one on the Billboard 200, and the group disbanded shortly after its release. Eazy-E died on March 26, 1995. Straight Outta Compton entered the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2017, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 after three previous nominations, and it received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. Of its members, Ice Cube (CTL-E-5698) and Dr. Dre (CTL-E-5355) hold records in this graph.
