Brother J (born Jason Hunter), billed in full as Grand Verbalizer Funkin' Lesson Brother J, is the lead lyricist and frontman of the Brooklyn hip-hop group X-Clan. AllMusic's artist entry lists him as a member of X Clan, and the group's biographies identify him as one of its primary members, alongside Professor X the Overseer, Paradise the Architect and Sugar Shaft the Rhythm Provider. His instructional, Afrocentric lyricism carried X-Clan's two foundational albums, To the East, Blackwards (1990) and Xodus (1992), including the tracks 'Funkin' Lesson' and 'Heed the Word of the Brother.' After the group's mid-1990s break-up he formed Dark Sun Riders, which released Seeds of Evolution in 1996, and in 2004 he assembled a new lineup under the name X Clan Millennium Cipher. Following Professor X's death in 2006, Brother J led the reformed X-Clan on Return from Mecca (2007) and Mainstream Outlawz (2009), and he remains the leader of the group's current incarnation. In a 2008 Final Call interview tied to a Saviours' Day performance, he described his lyrical aim as speech in service of truth and uplift rather than commercial excess.
