X-Clan is the Brooklyn group that fused Parliament-Funkadelic groove to Black nationalist instruction and became the standard-bearer of hip-hop's Afrocentric wave. Its original members carried ritual titles: Brother J, the Grand Verbalizer; Professor X, the Overseer; Paradise, the Architect; and DJ Sugar Shaft, the Rhythm Provider. The group was the best-known component of the Blackwatch Movement, the Brooklyn activist organization Professor X helped build and his father, Sonny "Abubadika" Carson, led. Their debut To the East, Blackwards (1990), released on 4th & B'Way/Island, ran eleven tracks — "Funkin' Lesson," "Heed the Word of the Brother," "A Day of Outrage" — over thick P-Funk samples, with Professor X's recurring benediction that the work was protected by the Red, the Black and the Green. Brother J, who called himself a pitbull for Black nationalism, has carried the X-Clan name forward with later lineups. CultureTechLens profiled X-Clan in Short #177.
