Joe Frazier (born Joseph William Frazier on 12 January 1944 in Beaufort, South Carolina; died 7 November 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American heavyweight boxer, Olympic champion and undisputed world heavyweight champion whose relentless pressure style and powerful left hook defined boxing's great heavyweight era. He reached the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a replacement for the injured Buster Mathis, who had beaten him in the trials, and won heavyweight gold. He turned professional in August 1965, and on 16 February 1970 knocked out Jimmy Ellis in five rounds to become undisputed champion. On 8 March 1971 he defeated Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision in the Fight of the Century at Madison Square Garden, handing Ali the first loss of his career and flooring him in the final round. He lost the title to George Foreman in January 1973, lost a rematch with Ali in 1974, and lost their brutal third meeting, the Thrilla in Manila, in October 1975. He retired in 1976, made a one-fight comeback in 1981, and entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. Tribute record: he died of liver cancer, aged 67.
