George "Mule" Suttles was a slugging first baseman and outfielder whose Negro leagues career ran from 1921 to 1944, spanning almost the entire golden era of segregated Black baseball. Born March 31, 1901, he emerged from Alabama coal country, where he had worked in the mines as a teenager, and joined the Birmingham Black Barons in 1923. He starred for the St. Louis Stars, helping them to Negro National League titles, and later played for the Chicago American Giants and the Newark Eagles, where he formed a celebrated infield alongside Willie Wells and Ray Dandridge. A right-handed hitter noted for tape-measure home runs, he topped .300 in twelve full seasons and was selected to five East-West Classic All-Star Games, hitting the first home run in that event in 1933 and a game-winning three-run homer in 1935. Fans greeted his at-bats with chants recorded by SABR. He managed the Newark Eagles in 1943 and 1944 and mentored younger players. Suttles died July 9, 1966, in Newark, New Jersey, and was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Mule Suttles entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6230 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2446 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: Negro leagues first baseman/outfielder and manager; scan rank #2446, Scan Tail Wave 6 Batch D. Not the similarly named other Suttles family members. Vital status: DECEASED. Born March 31, 1901 (Hall of Fame: Edgewater, Alabama; SABR: Blocton, Alabama — place conflict shown, not blended; SABR notes the family had moved to the Edgewater Coal Mining Camp by 1920). Died July 9, 1966, Newark, New Jersey (Hall of Fame; SABR adds death from cancer and burial at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, New Jersey). STATISTICS — Fragmentary by era; sources disagree and are not blended. SABR (accessed 2026-10-16), citing Seamheads, estimates a .317 career batting average, and gives .322 with 33 home runs and 125 RBIs in 136 Newark games (1936–1940). The Hall of Fame (accessed 2026-10-16) gives no career average, but records 12 full seasons over .300 and five East-West selections. No single career home-run total is asserted here because opened sources give none in common.
