Norman Thomas "Turkey" Stearnes was a five-tool center fielder and one of the Negro leagues' greatest hitters. Born May 8, 1901, in Nashville, Tennessee, he left school after his father's death to help support his family, played professionally in Montgomery in 1921, and joined the Detroit Stars in 1923, becoming the face of that franchise. A left-handed hitter with an unorthodox stance, he combined power, speed, and range, led the Negro National League in batting average twice, and was a five-time East-West All-Star selection. He won pennants with the Chicago American Giants in 1932 and 1933, played for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1938 through 1940, and made a final playing appearance in 1945. Off the field he was quiet and unassuming, and he worked in Detroit industry from 1938 to 1964, by his own account as recorded by SABR. Stearnes died September 4, 1979, in Detroit and was posthumously elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 6 — 747 Program, Wave 13; sixth Scan Tail packet at the founder’s 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (script + hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Turkey Stearnes entity, alias, or variant in the live graph (3,910 entities). ID CTL-E-6234 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger — scan string #2495 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json), banked in the Scan Tail Wave 5 reserve (Appendix E), re-screened CLEAR against the live graph at 3,910 entities by this wave. The supply supplied the name only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: Negro leagues center fielder; scan rank #2495. Nickname origin is itself disputed in the opened Hall of Fame source (running style vs. Stearnes's own account of a childhood potbelly); both versions are recorded there and neither is asserted as settled. Vital status: DECEASED. Born May 8, 1901, Nashville, Tennessee; died September 4, 1979, Detroit, Michigan (Hall of Fame; SABR). STATISTICS — Fragmentary by era; figures shown per source, not blended. Hall of Fame (accessed 2026-10-16): led the Negro National League in batting average twice; credited with 129 stolen bases; five East-West selections. SABR (accessed 2026-10-16), citing historian Richard Bak: 1923 Detroit line of .366 with 18 home runs and 89 RBIs. SABR also records a sixth home-run title with Detroit in 1931, while the Hall of Fame page opened for this record gives no home-run-title count, so no career home-run total is asserted. MEDIA: photo HELD (HELD — candidate: SABR BioProject portrait of Stearnes credited to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library (StearnesTurkey-NBHOF.png, as carried on the SABR page opened 2026-10-16); no license claimed — file-level rights read required under CTL-PHOTO-001.); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6234-turkey-stearnes.svg); video HELD (HELD — no Short in the CTL Shorts Link Map (2026-10-15) under Stearnes, Turkey Stearnes, or Norman Stearnes; no near-miss title found in the map.); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record’s sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (HELD — no Short in the CTL Shorts Link Map (2026-10-15) under Stearnes, Turkey Stearnes, or Norman Stearnes; n) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
