Ernest Everett Just
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Ernest Everett Just (1883–1941) was a biologist whose experiments on fertilization and the cell surface at Howard University and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole reshaped embryology; his Biology of the Cell Surface (1939) remains a classic. In 1915 he was the first recipient of the NAACP's Spingarn Medal. Barred by segregation from the full resources of American science, he worked for long stretches in European laboratories, and died in 1941 after internment in occupied France.
