PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Keechant L. Sewell (born April 2, 1972) served as the forty-fifth commissioner of the New York City Police Department, the first woman and the third Black person to hold the office. Raised in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens, Sewell joined the Nassau County Police Department in 1997 and rose over twenty-three years to chief of detectives, commanding some 350 officers; she had served in internal affairs and the professional standards bureau and trained as the county's chief hostage negotiator. Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced her appointment on December 14, 2021, and she was sworn in on January 1, 2022, taking command of roughly 35,000 uniformed officers. Her eighteen months in office were spent managing the city's post-pandemic crime debate and the Adams administration's public-safety agenda. On June 12, 2023, Sewell announced she was stepping down; no official reason was given. The New York Times reported that she had felt frustrated and undermined by City Hall, which, according to the Times, required its approval for police promotions and had handpicked senior officials around her. She later became senior vice president of security and guest experience for the New York Mets.
