PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Robert J. Contee III (born c. 1972) served as chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia from 2021 to 2023. A Washington native raised in the Carver Langston neighborhood, Contee joined the MPD as a seventeen-year-old cadet while a senior at Spingarn High School, became a sworn officer in 1992, and rose through district commands, the homicide branch, and the investigative services bureau to assistant chief. Mayor Muriel Bowser appointed him acting chief effective January 2, 2021; the D.C. Council confirmed him unanimously on May 4, 2021. Four days after he took command, on January 6, 2021, MPD officers were central to retaking the U.S. Capitol during the attack on it — the defining operational test of his first week and a through-line of his tenure, which was otherwise dominated by a post-pandemic rise in violent crime, a depleted force, and friction with the Council over police powers. Contee retired from the MPD on May 31, 2023, to become an assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
