PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Val Demings (born Valdez Demings, March 12, 1957) is a former chief of the Orlando Police Department and a former United States representative. Raised in Jacksonville in a family that moved from an Orange Park shack into a suburban home her father, a janitor and landscaper, bought, Demings worked as a state social worker before joining the OPD in 1984. Over a twenty-seven-year career she worked patrol, the detective bureau, and internal affairs, earning a master's degree in public administration. In December 2007, Mayor Buddy Dyer appointed Demings Orlando's police chief — the first woman to lead the department. She served through the Casey Anthony investigation era and a period of reported double-digit declines in violent crime, retiring on June 1, 2011. Demings then entered politics: she won Florida's 10th congressional district in 2016 and served three terms in the U.S. House (2017–2023), sat on the Intelligence, Judiciary, and Homeland Security committees, served as a House manager in President Donald Trump's first impeachment (one of few non-lawyers ever so named), was reported on Joe Biden's 2020 vice-presidential shortlist, and was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate from Florida in 2022, losing to Senator Marco Rubio. She is married to Jerry Demings, the former Orange County sheriff and mayor.
