Rodney Bryant
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Rodney Bryant is a former acting chief of the Atlanta Police Department. Bryant joined the APD in 1988 after a brief stint with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, and worked patrol, narcotics, and investigations, serving on the Georgia Law Enforcement Organization of Narcotics Enforcement Officers and the Atlanta chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. Promoted to major in 2013, he became an assistant chief in 2017, leading the department's criminal investigations division. When Chief Erika Shields resigned on June 13, 2020, hours after an Atlanta officer fatally shot Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy's parking lot, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms named Bryant acting chief. He led the department as an interim for two full years — through the protest period, a severe officer-retention crisis, and a sharp rise in homicides — until he retired on June 2, 2022, handing command to interim chief Darin Schierbaum. Bryant holds degrees from Georgia State University and Central Michigan University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange; after leaving the department he worked as a law-enforcement consultant.
