PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Nathaniel Glover Jr. (born March 29, 1943) is a former sheriff of Jacksonville, Florida — an elected county office, not an appointed chiefship. A Jacksonville native, Glover witnessed the violence of Ax Handle Saturday in August 1960 as a teenager, when white mobs attacked Black demonstrators downtown and he and a friend were threatened by police. He graduated from Edward Waters College in 1966 and joined the Jacksonville Police Department that year, rising over three decades to director of police services at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. In 1995 Glover won election as Jacksonville's sheriff, becoming — as his biographies record — the first African American elected sheriff in Florida since Reconstruction. He was re-elected in 1999 and served until 2003, building a reputation for community policing and for reforming the jail. After leaving office he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Jacksonville in 2003, published a memoir of his Ax Handle Saturday youth and policing career, and returned to his alma mater as the twenty-ninth president of Edward Waters University (later Edward Waters College), serving from 2010 to 2018.
