Jeri Williams
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Jeri L. Williams was the first woman chief of the Phoenix Police Department. A native Phoenician who grew up in the Maryvale neighborhood and graduated from Maryvale High School, Williams joined the Phoenix Police Department in 1989 and rose over twenty-two years to assistant chief. In 2011 she left to become chief of police in Oxnard, California — the first woman to lead that department. Phoenix brought Williams home in October 2016 as chief of a department of some 2,900 sworn officers. She was the department's first woman chief — a fact often stated in its fuller form: in taking the Phoenix job she became the first person, and the first woman, to lead both the Oxnard and Phoenix departments, and she went on to serve as the first female president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Her Phoenix tenure included sustained disputes over police shootings and, in August 2021, the opening of a U.S. Department of Justice pattern-or-practice investigation into the department's use of force and its treatment of people with disabilities and unhoused residents. Williams announced her retirement in the spring of 2022 and stepped down that summer. She is the mother of former Phoenix Suns center Alan Williams.
