VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Asadah Kirkland is a Chicago author, parent educator, and founder of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair. Her biography traces her literary work to 1994, when she managed the Afrocentric Bookstore in downtown Chicago; she lived in New York City from 1997 until returning to Chicago in 2014, working in parent education in both cities. Her first book, Beating Black Kids (2009), published under her own imprint, Asadah Sense Consulting, argued against corporal punishment and drew national media attention, including a 2014 appearance, as an author, on Al Jazeera's The Stream. Later books include Urban Girl Adventures (2012, written with her daughter Patience), Bitcoin for Black People (co-authored with Donna Beasley), and I Had to CHOOSE to Feel Better (2025). In 2019, Illinois State University documented her leading a “Classroom Culture” workshop for Chicago teachers. She founded the Soulful Chicago Book Fair, first held in 2016, and remains its host, with a further edition held February 15, 2026.
